Plant Varieties Act reform announced

The Government is inviting public consultation over proposed reforms of the Plant Variety Rights Act 1987. The Act, which regulates intellectual property protection of new plant varieties, has to be reformed in order to offer increased protections to plant breeders in accordance with the CPTPP, while the government also plans to increase protection for traditional Māori knowledge used in plant breeding.

NZ to ratify new TPP before Christmas

The Government has announced its intention for New Zealand be amongst the first six nations to ratify the modified Trans-Pacific Partnership, introducing legislation to achieve ratification before Christmas. Ratification of the agreement by 6 of the 11 members will trigger its application, reducing barriers to investment across the Pacific by giving additional protections in areas such as intellectual property.
